Tradition is set to collide with technology, journeying from ancient to futuristic when Hellhound Brown burns up the Discovery Stage at the Agnes Water Blues Roots & Rock Festival in February 2025.
Patch Brown is a wanderer, seeker and storyteller, a seasoned musician and one of Australia’s best kept secrets. Impressive collaborations include; former guitarist for The Superjesus, founding guitarist for Melbourne band Electric Mary, occasional member of Hugo Race’s True Spirit and more recently, trusted sideman to Jeff Martin from Canadian band ‘The Tea Party’, just a small taste of the many hats he wears. Despite his repertoire and experience, these days he chooses to recluse in the shadows to allow his alter ego, Hellhound Brown to take centre stage.
Hellhound Brown is a fictitious bluesman who draws his name from African American mythology and the mysterious voodoo around the Mississippi delta, referencing elusive characters such as Lightnin’ Hopkins, Muddy Waters and Hound Dog Taylor.
According to legend, Hellhound Brown is the reincarnation of Howlin’ Wolf’s second cousin once removed. Born at a young age somewhere in the South with six fingers on his left hand and a gold front tooth, he is a black man trapped in a white man’s body. By day he loiters around cemeteries and by night he plays the blues. His music is ancient and futuristic, blending tradition with technology.
Seriously though, Hellhound Brown is a conduit for the timeless spirit of the blues and a custodian of its legacy. Fusing American roots with psychedelia, his steel resonator guitar channels the ghosts of a bygone era. Driven by a relentless quest for musical truth, Hellhound embodies the soul of the blues, keeping its spirit alive whilst simultaneously dismantling and reconstructing it in a new and original way.
Brown has toured Europe, America, Canada and Australia where he now calls home. In Nashville, Tennessee he recorded at the legendary ‘Bomb Shelter’ Studio with Grammy Award winning producer Andrija Tokic. A seven-song mini album was born from the session featuring the single ‘Bring Me Water’ which is set for release in November. The record has traces of electrified John Lee Hooker boogie and overdriven Mississippi Fred McDowell, while the songs tell stories of betrayal, ‘Two Headed Woman’, survival ‘The Hustle’ and hope ‘Never Tell A Lie’.
With one foot in the past and the other forging new paths, Hellhound Brown’s story is a tribute to the greats and a bold step into unchartered territory. He remains timeless and mysterious in myth and in music.
Get ready to sell your soul when Hellhound Brown brings the magic and mystery of his music to burn up the #AgnesBluesFest Discovery Stage at 5.30pm on Saturday 22 February 2025. Sinner or saint, you won’t be able to resist his voodoo blues grooves.
