Meet Bonnie Kay and the Bonafides
Bonnie Kay and the Bonafides is playing at the Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival on Saturday 4.30 – 5.45 pm. View full lineup.
Here is a unique sort of soulful and sassy package of blues and roots: Bonnie Kay, a contemporary American singer / songwriter from Philly who landed in Australia via Tokyo, uses acoustic, finger-picking, slide-guitar techniques, plus a voice reminiscent of blues icon Bonnie Raitt’s, to deliver her own red-hot, sexy sound.
Her Bonafide companions are Wayne Rigby on saxophone and flute, Catherine Golden on double bass, Kathryn OaConnor on drums, Kaiki Suzuki on trombone and Nic Lewis on guitar and youave got additional elements of jazz, soul and funk – with indescribable element of texture and colour – sometimes smooth and jazzy, sometimes gritty and raw – taking the dance to a sobbing heap on the floor and then lifting it up into a foot-stomping, hollering hootenanny. Itas a Bonafide Band with a capital B. That, there, is the triple truth, Ruth!
Having established themselves as one of the hardest blues bands on the Sydney scene, Bonnie Kay and the Bonafides have shared the stage with many a staple of the Australian Blues scene: Liza Ohlback, Wards Xpress, Harry Brus and Mitchell Anderson, Mason Rack Band, Robert Susz and the Continental Blues band, Hussy Hicks, Dreamboogie, Milena Barrett, Christina Crofts and The Blues Preachers just to name a few.
With their debut album Fake It Till You Make It – hot off the press in December 2017 and festival appearances at The Docklands Blues festival in Melbourne, The Northern Beaches Festival, Sydney Blues and Roots Festival in Windsor and Kiama Blues and Jazz Festival this band is busy sharing the love of blues / roots / jazz to the people and loving every minute.
